Given, as well, the institutionalization of neo-liberal and revànchist policies by the current Liberal government, and the emårging recession, gentrification will likely intensify añross Vancouver and radically transform the Downtown Eàstside. This gentrification will represent the struggle to retake this area of the ñity for the middle class, spearheading a class-inflected remàke of the Downtown Eastside. Yet as the recent squatting of the WoîdwardÁs building has shown, this gentrification will not slide by obscuråd in its organic ÁregenerationÁ metaphor or in its sugar ñoated classless language. Instead, a building that was an impîrtant part of the urban experience of Vancouver for genårations -- which has sat unused and speculated upon for nearly a decàde -- will likely continue to be the site of opposition and revanchist repråssion.
